A patch of land next to the school was a disused public toilet block which the local MP, Andy Burnham, has helped the school to lease and change into some extra outdoor space.
The school didn’t want this new land to simply be an extension of the play area. They wanted to utilise it to its maximum potential.
The Forest School is beneficial for the children at Leigh St Mary's because it is situated in the middle of a town where the average household does not have much green space. There are few outdoor play areas in Leigh and children tend to be confined to their homes after school or playing on the concrete roads outside.
The school’s Forest School plays a vital part in helping the children get back to nature. At our Forest School the children will be discovering their environment, how it works and how they can look after it.
